CAIRNS, Dec 15 AAP - A mother and son today faced court charged with murdering a fisherman
and his 10-year-old son in the wilds of remote Cape York.

Bevin Simmonds, 36, and his 10-year-old son Brad were last seen in June this year when
they took an aluminium dinghy to check shark nets near the mouth of the Coleman River
on the western Cape.

Mr Simmonds' wife raised the alarm when they failed to return to the mother ship, but
a massive air, ground and sea search found no trace of them.

Police suspected foul play and opened a double murder investigation.

Joan Betty Gater, 56, of Pormpuraaw was arrested on Friday.

Her son, Michael Vincent Gater, 33, was arrested near the Cape York town of Laura.

They faced the Cairns Magistrates Court today charged with murder and were remanded
in custody to re-appear in court on February 4.

They were not required to enter a plea and did not apply for bail.

Joan Gater was also charged last July with attempting to pervert the course of justice
in relation to the investigation.
